The school board recently received a tutoring grant from the Ontario Ministry of Education to help strengthen its tutoring support program this summer.

“The Department of Education has released funding for all school boards across the province to initiate and form partnerships with community organizations, as well as third-party providers, to implement tutoring programs,” said said Chera Longston, school board communications manager. “So (we) request information from local suppliers. It’s not really a tender. This is not a traditional RFP. It’s just a request for information.

“So basically they can provide general information, information about their tutoring program, how they would get students into the program, how they would measure success, etc.”

Ultimately, Longston said the school board hopes to have a wide range of tutoring programs available in communities in the Avon-Maitland catchment area from July 1 through August 31 for students who have been identified as having need help with literacy, numeracy and other basic skills. learning skills in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Early readers could be a group (of students) that we would target and kids who were kind of at an early stage of learning numeracy and literacy,” Longston said. “These few years that we’ve just been through were kind of critical learning years (for a lot of students), so if they haven’t been able to move forward like they normally would have been, it’s is a chance to get them back up to speed.”

To provide more information about the Tutoring Support Program to potential partners, the school board will host a virtual information and Q&A session on May 11 at 2 p.m. To register for this session and determine if an organization or tutoring provider qualifies for this program, email Alicia McCreight, Director of Procurement Services for the Avon Maitland District School Board, at alicia.mccreight @ed.amdsb.ca.
