Universities will need to help schools improve the performance of disadvantaged students by organizing summer schools, offering private lessons or supporting program planning, the government said.

The measures will focus not only on students intending to pursue higher education, but also on improving overall performance. The government said universities “will work more with schools and colleges to raise standards in schools so that students get better qualifications and have more options.”

Background: Admissions: Higher education institutions could be fined £ 500,000

Coronavirus: NUS calls for £ 60million student hardship fund

New: Employers cut entry-level positions by a quarter

The school leaders’ union, the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said that while it welcomed projects to help disadvantaged students, the idea that universities are needed to raise standards is “ridiculous” and “insulting” and that it is difficult to see how the expertise “dropped in” from universities will raise standards.

Geoff Barton, General Secretary of ASCL, said: “We welcome any initiative to improve outcomes for disadvantaged students, and from the perspective of schools and colleges, support for universities in the form of schools. summer and contact with tutors may well be useful. “

But he added that while it could be helpful in terms of “debunking” the university for students and encouraging applications from under-represented groups, “we have to say that the part of this plan that talks about universities “working more with schools and colleges to raise standards in schools so that students get better qualifications” manages to be both ridiculous and insulting. “

“Teachers in schools and colleges are extremely experienced and expert in teaching these cohorts of students,” he said. “It’s hard to see how the parachuted expertise of an academic sector that knows far less about teaching these students will miraculously improve standards.”

Your understands that if universities cannot prove that they are helping disadvantaged students with their access and participation plans, they will not be able to charge the highest rate of fees per year.

It is already true that when universities do not get their APP approved, they cannot charge the highest rate of fees, but the new plans will be renegotiated to focus more on success within schools, Your understand.

Universities will also need to set targets to reduce dropout rates by providing support to students during their stay at the university, as well as improving the progression of graduates into well-paying jobs.

The Students Office has appointed John Blake, the former head of public affairs at Ark Schools, who also worked as the head of education and social reform at Policy Exchange, as the new director of access fairness and participation to oversee the actions.

“I look forward to working with universities and colleges to ensure that young people of all backgrounds can access the education that matches their accomplishments and aspirations,” said Mr. Blake.

He added that he was “particularly keen” to see how more partnerships between schools and universities could be developed so that disadvantaged students can be helped to access university places.

“But success and access are only the first steps: they must be accompanied by participation and success,” he said. He also suggested that students should take college courses that “meet their needs” and that undergraduates should be supported so that they are “ready to embark on a rewarding life and career upon graduation. of their diploma “.

Mr. Blake begins his new role in January.

The new plans are expected to begin in the 2023-24 academic year after a consultation. The current plans will apply for 2022-2023, but some universities may choose to update them sooner, although this does not affect the fees they may charge.

Ball State hosted an open house at the new Writing Center on the first floor of the Bracken Library on November 18, where drinks and cookies were offered to all students who visited. The goal of the Writing Center in organizing this event was to make itself better known on campus and to make students aware of the centre’s resources.

At the event, Jackie Grutsch McKinney, English teacher and director of the Writing Center, spoke with attendees about Writing Center resources. Taylor Sheridan, a major in journalism and tutor in the Writing Center’s lab, also attended the event and greeted the students.

McKinney said a new writing center had opened in Bracken “due to the dean of the library granting us access to open up this specific space for the one-on-one tutoring needs of Ball State students.”

Before the writing center took over this space, McKinney said the area was previously used for reference materials, including encyclopedias that were not used enough.

“It took a good six months to decide what this center would look like and where it would be, depending on the goal of not disturbing other people in the library,” McKinney said.

Sheridan said she enjoys working as a tutor because she learns something new with each session.

“Being able to interact with a lot of different students is really nice for me,” said Sheridan. “I also like that when I come to do my job, I never know what I’m going to get.”

McKinney said the Writing Center offers assistance on everything from research papers to resumes and cover letters.

MONTREAL – The CEO of Air Canada has hired a private tutor to learn to speak and understand the French language, according to a letter written to employees of the company.

Michael Rousseau was criticized last week after telling reporters that he had “been able to live in Montreal without speaking French and I think that’s a testament to the city of Montreal.”

The CEO high in Ontario was forced to apologize the next day for the comment, which sparked a language storm in the province.

“I did not want in any way to disrespect Quebeckers and Francophones across the country. I apologize to those who were offended by my words,” he said.

In a letter written in French to Air Canada employees, Rousseau says he “regrets” the comments he made about his inability to speak or understand one of Canada’s official languages while living in Quebec for 14 years.

“People who know me well know that these words do not reflect my values and beliefs,” he said. “I take and accept personal criticism. However, the criticisms of our people and our practices hurt me deeply when you work so hard to serve our customers. “

Rousseau goes on to confirm that he has hired a private teacher and that his “learning French” has already started.

In addition, he says that the company’s official languages practices will be reviewed and strengthened.

“I will personally oversee this process to ensure that all required actions are taken,” Rousseau said.

AN “IMPORTANT CRITERION”

Following the language clashes, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland wrote a letter to Air Canada’s board of directors asking that Rousseau’s French skills be a determining factor in his annual performance review .

She also asked that mastery of the French language be an “important criterion” for professional promotion.

Vagn Sørensen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Air Canada, responded to Freeland’s letter by stating: “We have discussed our concerns regarding these events with Mr. Rousseau and we are confident that he will do everything possible to achieve our collective objective of promoting the use of French within the company. “

Sørensen notes that the board has already released several changes, including:

  • Intensive training in French for Rousseau;

  • Review the French language proficiency requirements for key company positions;

  • Evaluate French policies and practices across the organization at the next Governance Committee meeting.

‘IT ANNOYS ME’

The premier of Quebec, François Legault, spoke following the incident, saying he was indignant at the attitude of the CEO.

“I watched Mr. Rousseau’s video and I find it insulting. It makes me angry, his attitude, to say that he has been in Quebec for 14 years and that he has not needed to learn French. It’s indescribable, it shocks me. , “he said.” This shows a lack of respect towards the French-speaking employees of Air Canada. “

The company has a history of non-compliance with the Languages Act, according to Canada’s Commissioner of Official Languages Raymond Théberge.

“It starts at the top. The example is given at the top and then the message is given to the organization from the top, ”he said. “I think it is very useful for executives who head bilingual institutions or organizations to be able to address their employees, their clients and their stakeholders in both official languages.

He notes that he has received dozens of complaints about the incident.
