District 742 Needs Tutors

(KNSI) – St. Cloud area schools are looking for 26 tutors to help teach preschool and elementary school students. Twenty tutors are needed to help with reading, four in math and two for the early learning program.

Reading & Math Inc. senior manager Katelyn Dokken says many children come into the classroom unprepared to learn.

“There are so many kids who don’t have those basics and don’t have the ability to get to that level of reading or math. And in Minnesota right now more than half of our students don’t read or do grade level math. So it’s a big problem. »

She says getting young children to read is key to learning.

“If you can’t read like you should, in third grade, how are you going to do history or even those algebra math problems?” How are you going to do the speaking class? You know it’s all about those building blocks and those reading skills.

Officials say students have fallen behind during the pandemic. Dokken says using tutors can help children catch up.

“Most of our students that the tutors work with make over a year of progress during the school year. Working with their tutors is so impactful.

Tutors are also needed in the Sartell-St. School District of Stephen and Sauk Rapids-Rice.

Officials say no teaching experience is necessary. All tutors receive a stipend every two weeks, plus up to $4,500 to pay for tuition or student loans. People 55 or older can gift their scholarship to their child, grandchild, son-in-law or foster child. Many guardians are also entitled to benefits such as free individual health insurance and childcare assistance.

Reading Corps and Math Corps tutors are trained and work 35, 25 or 18 hours per week in school. Tutors are invited to commit to the program for one year between August 2022 and June 2023.

Reading Corps, Math Corps, and Early Learning Corps recruit 1,700 tutors throughout Minnesota.
