McGiffin wins parenthesis, Mertena and Tomase victorious at college ranked Spotlight +1

CARY, NC – Tenika mcgiffin winning her draw was the culmination of a terrific final day of the 2021 Spotlight +1 varsity rankings as the Tennessee women’s tennis team wrapped up its third tournament of the fall season.

“This weekend has been a very precious weekend for the team”, head coach Alison ojeda said thinking over the weekend. “Our daughters have played against some of the best competitions in the country and won 10 of the 17 games. And all 7 we lost, except one, could have gone one way or the other.”
Results are starting to show for the preparation Tennessee did this fall and that growth will continue as the fall continues on Coach Ojeda mentioned.

“Our girls can leave knowing they have spent the whole weekend improving,” Ojeda continued. “We understand what it means to be competing for every point and it’s going to pay us dividends.”

McGiffin entered the day with five straight wins and took the field against second-placed Ohio State, this time it was Sydni Ratliff. The first two sets a back-and-forth affair with each side grabbing a set, McGiffin the first 6-3, Ratliff the second, 7-6 (3). The seasoned senior remained calm as she dominated the third set 6-0 en route to her second tournament win and the first since her first year.

Rebeka Mertena shot in a solid week of play with a 3-2 record. She finished the weekend against Lucia Marzal of Ohio State, after trading the first two sets, 4-6, 6-4, No.55-ranked Mertena pulled off the tiebreaker, winning 10 -2.
