Methodist University Receives Record Donation of $ 14 Million | North Carolina News
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) – A university in North Carolina has received the biggest giveaway in its history and has said most of it will go to scholarships.
According to a Methodist University press release, the $ 14 million donation was granted through the estate of Robert J. Chaffin of Fayetteville, who died in late May at the age of 93. Chaffin was linked to financial institutions in the Fayetteville area.
More than $ 12 million of the donation will go directly to scholarships. The other $ 1.5 million is for the school‘s nursing program and its state-of-the-art facilities, which will be named in honor of Chaffin, the statement said.
The $ 14 million donation follows other recent donations and grants to Methodist University, which helped cut the ribbon this fall for a football stadium, complete work on a softball field and to install lights at the school football stadium.
Other donations have helped projects such as the construction of the Matthews Ministry Center, the construction of the Union-Zukowski Hall and Gallery, and, in 2022, the planned completion of a concert hall.
