Muscogee County School Board District 2

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Multiple candidates are running for the Muscogee County School Board. Tonight, we learned more about the District 2 candidates.

Nickie Tillery and Sadiyah Abdullah say many changes are needed in the school district to help students have a positive attitude.

Tillery is a Columbus resident who took the District 2 seat in June 2021, following the death of longtime Muscogee County School Board member and educator Mike Edmondson.

She is running to keep her seat opposite Sadiyah Abdullah, a Columbus native and educator.

Both candidates say one of their top priorities is addressing the need for better state test scores and ensuring children are prepared for the future.

They both say their experience makes them best placed to impact students.

“I love children and I love what I do in the field of education. And when I look at the scores and only 68% of students in Muscogee County schools are reading at the grade level when you look at 3rd through 5th graders, and math is much worse at 38%, then science goes down from from there,” Abdallah expressed.

“It’s for kids and teachers where they are because we’re trying to adapt an old business model to a new business. We need to praise and encourage them, and we need to involve teachers and students,” Tillery explained.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow on our morning show to hear more from Tillery and Abdullah about the new ideas they have in store for the future of the Muscogee County School District.
